Ian McEwan: The Comfort of Strangers

Thought this would be a nice lil beach read, to complement the cheap wine and warm winds of North Carolina. For a while, it was. The book centers around a hot couple that's maybe a little bored with each other, on vacation in an indeterminate seaside city (probably Italian or Spanish). Some museum going and perfunctory sex ensues, and then a weird local arrives and takes them to a smoky bar well off the pages of "Let's Go" ... and the whole thing goes off the rails. Profound? Hot? Creepy? It's hard to tell with Skynyrd on the pool PA and a miniature infatable shark wandering towards the deep end.

My Pandora Radio Station, cont'd

Hopefully, it's improving, after weeks of massaging the algorithm. Bought a Tortoise disc today because of it:

Schtum: Cheap as mag-a-zines-AHH

I'm in a mid- to late -90s rock freakout, after unearthing a tower of CMJ CD compilations that date as far back as maybe '96. Schtum was one of those that just killed, and I guess, disappeared. I Googled them quickly and it turns out they're from Northern Ireland (if the Internet is to be trusted). I'm reminded of Fugazi, and a tiny east village studio where I used to live, practice and watch mice dart out from behind the stove.

One of my favorite songs on the only album I know is called "Space"

Check the muscle in the dude's voice. Kicks my ass. And the cover is a jackhammer. C'mon. Awesome.

Count to Ten

I pass in too little time
Too fast you slip from my mind
I cast you here and I see you shine

Over and over again
Over and over

I count to ten
Blink and I see you then
Hiding like spies among desperate lives til we meet again

Lightning in luminous beams
Lost kings and exiled queens
Waiting in the garden of only a dream

I want you
I need you
I miss you

Audio Spring Cleaning

Sifting through late '90s-00's CMJ compilations: Sebadoh, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Schtum, American Analog Set, Rentals, Len, Atari Teenage Riot... so fun.
